CANFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – The newly remodeled greenhouse at Canfield Middle School is helping students learn about botany.
The greenhouse was once used for storage but has been turned into a lab for students to get hands-on experience to coincide with their lessons.
The year-long program teaches students about the growing stages of plants and essential nutrients. A special experiment is also underway to teach the students how fertilizers impact the growth of pepper plants. The lessons are part of the standard sixth and seventh grade curriculum, but the greenhouse helps bring those lessons to life.
“When you teach kids through hands on, things that they are actually doing and seeing come to life, things click with them a little more and it is more beneficial,” said Science teacher Steve DeMaiolo. It is a better way to teach. It is a better way to learn.”
